Our History
Shared Cause, formerly DCA, is one of the nation’s most experienced social impact consulting firms and a pioneer in the field of collective impact. Since 1991, we have been helping organizations and coalitions achieve transformative social change. Our efforts have advanced health, education, and economic opportunity here at home and internationally.
From the beginning, our approach has been to frame issues as causes that inspire profound and sustained involvement and then help create the systems and partnerships necessary for success. Our tradition is to stay connected with the organizations, institutions and coalitions we serve to help launch their initiatives and see them underway.
Our early assignments had a public health focus. We assisted historic efforts to eliminate global public health problems such as river blindness, iodine deficiency disorder and maternal and neonatal tetanus. We helped create the nation’s preeminent tobacco control initiative. And we figured prominently in the growth of the country’s leading anti-drug coalition support organization. We later expanded to help hospitals, health centers and voluntary health associations develop and fund new initiatives to enhance their impact.
Meanwhile, Shared Cause developed a deep practice in building community-based systems of support for literacy, early childhood education, post-secondary attainment, and workforce development. More recently, we’ve assisted innovative efforts to care for frail elders. Through hands-on work on assignments over many years, we’ve gained knowledge of how to solve problems on a large scale.
